Tres Libros: Book Reviews for Vintage Indie

Although I've only pictured one cover, here's a link (by clicking the headline above) to a review of three Mexican Hacienda style decorating books in my "Off the Shelf" column for Vintage Indie http://www.vintageindie.com. It's a great blog and Web site, so check out the other posts. Owner Gabreial Wyatt also has a great review of The Ruby Pear tea room in Noblesville, IN.

Welcome to My Holiday Open House!

It's another wonderful blog party heard 'round the world. On Wednesday, Dec. 12 be sure to visit http://karlascottage.typepad.com/ for a holiday open house linking my home to many more decorated homes for you to view. I know Karla's will be fab, and many promise to be much more elaborate than what I have done. Here's a few pics from me, but tomorrow (or depending upon when you are reading this) click on Karla's blog above and there you will find links to all the homes in the tour.

Trees 2, 3 and 4 Done. Check. Check. Check.

Black Friday is the greatest day of the year for staying home, sleeping in, decorating, eating leftovers, baking something, ordering pizza and decorating some more. Today I not only managed to get a handle on the overload of Thanksgiving dishes, (dishwasher loads, that is), but I also went through more basement storage to bring up my office tree, put out my outside tree and find all the supplies for the big tree in the family room.
It was spitting snow and freezing while I was out gathering up plants and gourds, changing flags, rigging up a park bench vignette and, yes, spray painting a wreath. I never seem to do any of this when it is warm. My wreath turned out well, with some quick spritzes of silver, gold and spray snow on a formerly red, white and blue wreath. I made a fancy gold bow and was all set. The outside tree is heavily flocked, a former prop from Bath and Body Works. I have a plethora of $1 trees for various seasons from BBW. Gotta have connections.
My office tree is 3', kind of vintage Victorian, reds and golds, with some glass hearts and a Capiz shell angel on top. The family room tree is traditional greem with all of the kids' handmade ornaments on it, some of mom and dad's childhood ornaments, some Hallmark sentimental year ones and some with pictures of our former cats, Myrtle, Murphy, Maynard and Mookie. We so look forward to getting all of these out every year.
Also here is an up-close shot of one of my six 'Besty' ornaments on my pink tree from Sadie Lou Who on Etsy or here http://craftilyeverafter.blogspot.com.
Decorating is mostly done, except for some snomen here and there, and the basement family room. That one gets a skinny prim tree, if I put it out. We remodeled the basement into more of a retro-modern Pier 1/Pottery Barn American casual look this year, and I am not sure the old country primitive ornaments are going to work. But then, four trees are just as good as five.

Little Pieces of Me

Pictured above and below are a few shots from around my house that I was inspired to share after seeing fellow blogger Kari Ramstrom of MN http://artsymama@blogspot.com/ published in the November issue of Romantic Country. How exciting for her!

Call me weird, but I like to keep my table set so I can enjoy my dishes, table linens and candles and rearranging them with the seasons. Since my kitchen is mustard and cranberry, this setting works about half the year. Then I like to go all white in the late winter/spring, and I also like to break out the silver and gold and maroon for the holidays.

The bowl of potpourri in the living room was an unfinished paper or bamboo bowl from TJ Maxx that I painted brown and turquoise. The word stones and glass pebbles came from Pottery Barn in a silver bowl/candle holder thingy I got on after-holiday clearance at Bath and Body Works for something like $2. Gotta love a sale!

The shells and bottles of sand go with my nautical/neutral bathroom and the little Halloween tableaus with grinning vintage ghouls and Peanuts are just temporary kitchen decor.

How I Love All Things Fall!

I was so excited with the cold snap that when I got home tonight I was running around grabbing fall decorations, washing my market treasures, opening windows, lighting candles and generally celebrating my favorite season. I am also glad to finally be one with my blog again, having not posted since Sunday. Not working on anything the least bit artistic all week was sheer misery. But, my work travels took me all over the place from IN to KY to IN to MI to IN again with some overnights thrown in, sooo, no time for play. I guess I must cram it all in this weekend. Can't decide what to do first (again). Got some great art magazines to look at. I am really loving Cloth, Paper, Scissors so I got some back issues. I love all Stampington and Co. publications. Well, the list goes on. I have my Country Home, Country Living and Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion piled up. But, I have so many goodies to make and swaps to complete. I wish there was a way to stay up for 48 hours all weekend and not suffer.
My little Pookie leaves for Las Vegas Sunday for her first trip there as an adult. She is going with a group of friends, and the MGM Grand may never be the same. Maybe we should have a Blackjack lesson tonight. Nope, no time. Happy Fall!
